The Executive Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Dr. Gift Worlu, has declared a fresh war on crime with the announcement of an indefinite ban on the operations of commercial motorcyclists, popularly known as Okada riders, across the council area.

The ban, which takes effect from August 1, 2026, is part of the council’s renewed efforts to strengthen security and tackle the rising wave of criminal activities in the local government.

Announcing the decision, Dr. Worlu said the measure became necessary in view of increasing cases of insecurity, including kidnappings, armed robbery, cult-related violence and other criminal activities threatening the peace and safety of residents.

According to him, the ban is designed to reinforce the existing security framework in the area and prevent criminal elements from exploiting commercial motorcycles to perpetrate crime.

The council chairman urged all commercial motorcycle operators to take advantage of the notice period to seek alternative means of livelihood before the directive takes effect.

He warned that the local government would not tolerate any violation of the order, stressing that anyone found operating commercial motorcycles after the commencement date would face severe sanctions in accordance with the law.

Dr. Worlu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property, insisting that the security and well-being of residents remain a top priority. He noted that the council would continue to collaborate with security agencies and other stakeholders to sustain peace, strengthen law enforcement and rid Obio/Akpor of criminal activities.
