Thousands of spectators on Wednesday converged on the Mohammed Aminu Square, popularly known as the ‘racecourse’, in Zaria to witness the International Horse Racing Derby.

The event, organised by the Horse Racing Federation of Nigeria (HRFN), attracted participants and spectators from across Nigeria as well as neighbouring countries, including Niger Republic, Cameron, Chad and Burkina Faso.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the competition, themed “Renewed Hope Zaria 2026,” featured nine races on its opening day.

Of the Nine race featured at opening ceremony was race number one, under Division IV Naija Breed Dukusai (4F-800m), with late Alhaji Aminu Tijjani (Turakin Zazzau) Memorial Cup.

Ameerah of S.D. Stable of Niger State won the first Position with N400,000 price while Aisha from S.D. Stable won second position with N300,000 price.

Speaking at the event, the National Coordinator of HRFN, Alhaji Mustapha Bida, said the derby was part of efforts to revive and promote horse racing in Nigeria.

Bida noted that Zaria occupies a prominent place in the history of horse racing in the country, adding that the Mohammed Aminu Square racecourse was established during the colonial era.

According to him, horse racing activities in Zaria had been dormant for about 14 years before efforts were made to revive the sport.

“We organised a similar event last year after a 14-year break, and we are continuing with it this year. This makes the event very significant,” he said.

The coordinator explained that the theme, “Renewed Hope Zaria 2026,” reflected the support and encouragement the federation had received under the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

He described the turnout as impressive, noting that the derby attracted horse owners, riders and enthusiasts from several West and Central African countries, including Niger Republic, Chad, Cameroon and Burkina Faso.

Bida expressed optimism that the annual competition would further strengthen cultural ties, boost tourism and restore Zaria’s status as one of Nigeria’s leading horse racing centres.

Also speaking, Alhaji Isa Haruna-Mohammed, Member Representing Zaria Kewaye Constituency, Kaduna State House of Assembly commended the organizers for event.

He said as a lawmaker he would actively key into the subsequent horse racing tournaments toward engaging the youths and strengthening the economic activities in Zaria.

Highlight of the event was presentation of medals and prices to the winners that featured at the event.(NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
