The Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria (LGAN) has decorated Shola Mese (JP) as an All Africa Challenge Trophy (AACT) Ambassador.

Mese, the Vice Captain of Ogunu Golf Club in Warri, Delta, and Founder of the Shola Mese Foundation, received the honour when the LGAN President, Dr Lami Onayi Ahmed and her team paid him a courtesy visit in his office in Abuja.

The LGAN president described the AACT as a platform for promoting female golf in Africa.

Ahmed said the 2026 AACT would hold in Abuja from Nov. 2 to Nov. 7, attracting participants from more than 30 African countries.

According to her, the championship will boost tourism, encourage youth participation, and strengthen Nigeria’s profile in international golf.

She said Mese’s appointment reflected his commitment to golf development and support for women-focused initiatives.

She added that “Mese embodies excellence, leadership and dedication to the growth of golf in Nigeria.

“His appointment as AACT Ambassador will inspire golfers, attract stakeholders, and strengthen Nigeria’s presence in continental competitions.”

She added that preparations for the championship were progressing steadily with support from government agencies and private partners.

“We are determined to deliver a world-class tournament that will showcase Nigeria’s hospitality and organisational capacity,” she said.

The association also presented an award of appreciation to Mese for his contributions to golf development and women empowerment.

Responding, Mese thanked LGAN for the recognition and pledged continued support for successful hosting of the championship.

He said “I am honoured by this recognition. Golf development, especially for women, deserves sustained investment and encouragement.”

Mese noted that women occupied a special place in his heart, recalling the influence of his late mother.

“My passion for supporting women is deeply personal. I lost my mother, whom I loved dearly, and her values continue to inspire me,” he said.

He pledged to use his position to promote awareness of the championship across golf clubs and communities nationwide.

He said “I accept this responsibility with pride and humility. I will work with stakeholders to ensure successful and memorable AACT in 2026.”

Mese said that hosting the championship would position Nigeria as a leading golf destination and create new opportunities for young golfers.

“The tournament offers unique opportunity to project Nigeria positively and inspire the next generation of golfers across Africa,” he added. (NAN)
