Dr Michael David, Executive-Director of Global Initiative for Food Security and Ecosystem Preservation (GIFSEP), has urged Nigerians to look beyond the politics of ethnicity, zoning, religion, and stomach infrastructure.
David made the call at the unveiling of a nationwide citizens’ movement, the Vote4Climate 2027 Campaign in Abuja.
He said that the aim of the campaign was to place climate action, environmental sustainability, food security, clean energy, health, and human security at the heart of Nigeria’s democratic process ahead of the 2027 General Elections.
“We are proud to officially launch the Vote4Climate 2027 Campaign, a nationwide citizens’ movement aimed at placing climate action, environmental sustainability, amongst others at the heart of Nigeria’s democratic process ahead of the 2027 General Elections.
David expressed concern over the fact that Nigerians were faced with a future they cannot fully predict, as they gear up for its 2027 General Elections.
“With primaries concluded, campaigns igniting, we issue urgent challenge to every journalist, every Nigerian voter, every civil society organisation, and every community leader.
“It is time to interrogate the candidates on the real issues.”65 years after independence, it is profoundly sad that our election campaigns have barely changed.
“The same appeals to ethnicity, to zoning, to religion.This must end in 2027.
“The election of 2027 must be different, not because politicians have changed, but because citizens have changed and the stakes have changed,” he said.
David said that the 2027 elections must not only be about who governs Nigeria but about the future Nigerians choose for themselves and generations yet unborn.
“The future of Nigeria will not be determined solely by political rhetoric. It will be determined by the choices we make at the ballot box,” he warned.
