Mr Hammed Aroyewun, Chairman of Igbogbo/Baiyeku Local Council Development Area in Lagos State, has urged security agencies to strengthen intelligence-driven operations and improve collaboration to address emerging security threats in the area.
Aroyewun made the call on Wednesday during a high-level security meeting held at the council conference room.
According to Aroyewun, the council is compiling a full database of foreign residents in the area as part of efforts to boost security and intelligence.
He added that the increasing influx of foreign nationals into certain communities had made proper documentation and monitoring essential.
“We have begun engagements with leaders of affected communities and resolved to compile a comprehensive database of all foreign nationals residing within the LCDA.
“This initiative is aimed at improving intelligence gathering and ensuring that security agencies have accurate information needed to safeguard residents,” he said.
The chairman emphasised that security agencies must collaborate and share intelligence instead of operating independently.
“Security agencies cannot afford to work in silos. Effective collaboration and information sharing are critical to addressing emerging threats and maintaining public safety,” he said.
Aroyewun commended security operatives for their prompt response in neutralising a recent security threat within the council area.
He, however, noted that routine patrols alone were no longer sufficient to guarantee security.
“We must move beyond routine patrols and embrace proactive measures, deliberate policies and preventive actions capable of stopping security threats before they escalate,” he said.
The chairman also raised concerns about the spread of fake news and misinformation, calling it an increasing threat to public safety.
According to him, false information often creates unnecessary panic, undermines security operations and weakens public confidence in authorities.
He directed security agencies and Community Development Committee (CDC) officials to intensify public enlightenment campaigns and provide residents with timely and verified information.
CSP Akinola Clement, Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Ikorodu Division, assured residents of the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to maintaining peace and security.
“The police will continue to collaborate with sister agencies, traditional institutions and community stakeholders to ensure the safety of lives and property,” he said.
He also urged the CDC to sustain regular security meetings and ensure compliance with relevant regulations.
Also speaking, Mr Joel Adisa of the Department of State Services (DSS) called for a bye-law to hold landlords accountable for criminal activities on their premises.
“We need a legal framework that will make property owners more responsible and discourage the harbouring of criminal elements,” he said.
CDC Chairman of Igbogbo/Baiyeku , Alhaji Razaq Ibiyeye, disclosed that directives had already been issued restricting scavengers from operating in sensitive locations within the council area.
The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) representative, Mr Odunayo Seyi, supported the introduction of formal bye-laws to strengthen enforcement and territorial compliance. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
